If your oil paint is just a little dirty you can get away with a very light cleaning. This can be done with the help of an onion. Cut an onion into two pieces; rub the painting with half of the onion and a portion of chemical. When you use this method the effect of this cleaning can be intensified by adding some drops of lemon juice to the mixture. As your cleaning the oil painting you will need to replace the onion piece you are using with a fresh piece of onion. Be sure to wipe the painting clean with a wet sponge before you allow it to dry.
If your paint needs a little bit more of a cleaning, this can be done by using a mixture of lukewarm water and some detergent that has lemon in it; mix together to make a solution and wipe using a soft sponge. Make sure the sponge is not ringing wet; you do not want to soak the canvas with water. This is a great way to clean oil paintings that have been exposed to smoke or have accumulated a lot of grime on them.
Make sure you rinse the sponge on a regular basis in order to keep the sponge clean when you’re working on removing a lot of grime. You will also need to use a different sponge to wipe the painting clean in order to remove any residue left by the detergent solution.
For the use of heavier cleanings you can use a solution of Lectric Soda (Sodium Carbonate), or Washing Soda, depending upon which one is available to you, both work great. Be sure to be very careful when making and applying this mixture, too strong of mixture can ruin your oil painting. When making the solution add a small pinch of soda crystals to a cup of warm water, mix until the crystals dissolve.
After you are finished making the mixture you should apply it to a test area, a corner works great, by using a cotton ball dipped in the solution; this way you will be able to tell if the solution is too weak or too strong. Rub the cotton ball in a circular motion, depending on the effect of the solution you may need to add a little more soda crystals to the mixture. It’s better to start out with a solution made with less soda crystals and add more if needed. Be sure to check the solution in a trial area every time you add more crystals. After you have created the right mixture to clean your painting, you are ready to clean the entire oil painting. When you are done, take a clean soft sponge and rinse the entire painting in order to remove all traces of the residue that will be left from the soda crystals.
If you follow these procedures you will be delightfully surprised by the result of the outcome.
