Landscape in Oil Painting can Capture you Favorite Spot

There’s nothing like looking at an oil painting of a beautiful landscape, such as the rolling hills or the waves breaking along the ocean. A brilliant landscape portrait will bring back memories of a special place of give you the illusion that you are right there in the painting. Capturing this feeling is something that many artists take a lifetime to accomplish.

As an artist you want to portrait to your viewer a look of realism as if they were right inside your picture. You want it to be both breathtaking and mesmerizing. In order to do this there are a few tricks that you need to master. Using clarity is a must. You might want to add some fog that is thick over the hills in the distance and fades as you move towards the front of the picture. Or put in a winding path that makes your viewer feel like he could take a walk on the trail that you have created. Another trick is to put things in proportion. If a tree is up close, it should be large, if it is far away, the tree should be smaller. You want things to seem real.

You also have to realize that when you are painting a landscaping you do not have to put everything you see in the picture. Feel free to add things that you see or things that you don’t see. If you want to add a bird, than add a bird. If you don’t like the colors of the flowers, than by all means change them to suit your needs, you might want to add clouds to the sky, or make the day sunny instead of rainy, it’s entirely up to you, you’re doing the painting.

The thing with landscape oil paintings is that you want to capture the feel of your surroundings, if you painted it exactly as you saw it, you would call it a photograph not a painting.

Many artists like to paint on location; it gives them a feel of the area they are painting and helps them to capture the lighting as it changes throughout the day. A good way to get a feel for your painting is to start out by drawing your landscaping first and then go over it with the paints. Some artists have a hard time with painting clouds. Because clouds are three dimensional and reflect light, catching all the colors to give them realism is not always easy.

When adding clouds to your landscape its best give more detail to the clouds that are closer, when they are further away they will have less detail and be smaller in size. When you paint the edges of the clouds remember that smooth edges recede and sharp edges advance.

Your landscape in oil painting should be a reflection of how you perceive a favorite place in your life. You want people to wish they were there or take them back to memories of their own.
